My name is Tatiana Lauth.
My cooking journey started when I moved to America in October 2013.
My world was turned upside down, not only because of the cultural differences but also because of the knowledge that I gathered about food.
After living in Russia for 40 years, I had no idea about GMO modified food. Moreover, I didn’t know that the food could be full of hormones, antibiotics, high corn fructose etc.
Soon after moving to the US, my future husband and I stopped at the coffee shop to get a cup of coffee. I usually enjoy having a cup of cappuccino every day, it gives me energy, its aroma rises my mood, and its warm taste spreads throughout my body. However, something went wrong this time. As soon as I took a couple of sips, I realized that I couldn’t taste the coffee because of the enormous amount of sugar. It tasted like I was drinking extremely sweet water which had a faint smell of coffee. I threw away this strange beverage then I gulped down a whole bottle of water to wash the sweet taste out of my mouth. Ten minutes later I started feeling nauseous, then I experienced an extremely sharp pain in my stomach. I felt as though my stomach was on fire. Then felt dizzy and passed out! Doesn’t it seem weird to you that I had such an abnormal reaction to a simple cup of coffee? As it turned out, my coffee contained a large amount of artificial sugar which lead to my condition. I had no idea, that there was such a thing as “artificial sugar”. Normally I would add natural sugar or honey with my coffee.
